Very disappointing Ritz Carlton

2/5

·

I was excited about my short, 2-night (which unfortunately turned into a 3 night) stay at the Ritz Carlton Istanbul. Last month I stayed at the Ajwa Sultanahmet, and was looking forward to staying in the more convenient Bosphorous/Taksin area. Unfortunately, while the location was better, this edition of The Ritz Carlton was one of my most disappointing hotel stays in recent memory. This is going to be a long review as there is much to tell, and sadly most will be quite negative. And while the hotel did give me a major upgrade when I wanted to check out early on my first night, it still doesn’t make this hotel recommendable on any level. It is simply a case of aging infrastructure coupled with poor management and an incompetent staff. There was very little that I could do in this hotel that didin’t produce a high (and unnecessary) level of frustration. Let’s start with the couple of good points. The location is excellent, with nice views of the surrounding city and the Bosphorous. And while it isn’t in a neighborhood, per se, it is a short uphill walk to Taksim Square and all that area has to offer. It is also easy to get a cab to or from there, which was definitely not the case when I stayed in Sultanahmet. The view from both of the rooms I was assigned (explained subsequently) were very nice. The bed and bath linens were of good quality and the bed and pillows were very comfortable. Just about everything else in this hotel was a big missed opportunity in my opinion. From breakfast in the morning to bathroom design and lighting controls - everything was well below the standards of other luxury brands. I would actually have preferred to stay at the much less luxurious (and less expensive) Intercontinental Hotel up the hill as I feel it is better managed, a better value and serves its customers’ needs better. On my first night there I was assigned a deluxe Bosphorous view room, which was exactly what I had booked through the American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts collection. No mention was made of an upgrade and none was offered. The greeting and introductions at Ritz Carlton hotels are over the top and very time consuming. Maybe some customers appreciate it - I do not. When I check in at a hotel at the end of a long trip all I want to do is get to a nice room, unpack and take a nap. At Ritz Carlton Hotels, everyone introduces themselves and wants to give you a tour. I find it overly time consuming, formulaic, scripted and saccharine. Please just let me check in and get me up to my room. When the bellman showed me my room, it was warm. The thermostat was set to 72 degrees fahrenheit. I asked if the windows opened. I was told there was one small window that opened, but not enough for good air flow. I turned the thermostat down to 65 degrees. I left the room soon after and when I returned, the thermostat had reset to 72 degrees. This is a big deal to me, as I like to sleep in a very cold room. I called and asked if there was a card I needed to leave in a slot that would keep systems working when I was out of the room, I was told there was none. One person told me there was a motion sensor in the room, but another person said that the sensor does not affect the thermostat. In any case, I complained and was offered an upgraded room instead, which I accepted. I was upgraded to an Istanbul Suite - a large suite with living room, bedroom, sunroom, powder room and a huge mirror-clad master bathroom. It was lovely, and I appreciated the upgrade. Unfortunately it didn’t really improve my stay that much as the hotel suffers from a myriad of annoying and thoughtless service and design oversights. Here is a long list of problems at this hotel: Service: The staff is initially friendly but not very competent. They were often unable to answer basic questions, and I often got different responses to the same question from different staff members. Their grasp of English was also very rudimentary. For instance in the club lounge, I asked the attendant if there was a phone I could use to call the front desk. His response “on the first floor.” I said, “there’s no phone I can use here?” He said, “yes, on first floor.” There was a telephone on the desk near the entrance of the club lounge… Key cards: The key card system at this hotel is ridiculously unreliable. Every guest I saw had a hard time getting their card to work the elevator or open their room locks. In addition the keys are very susceptible to being deprogrammed by a mobile phone (at least that’s what I was told by the front desk.) Twice during my stay my room key became deprogrammed and required a wait at the front desk to have the key reprogrammed. The elevator: For two of my three days, only one of 3 or 4 elevators was operational. This required long waits to get in and out of the hotel. Breakfast: This was a big disappointment. This was one of the worst breakfast buffets I’ve experienced at a luxury brand in the last 20 years. The coffee (in a country famous for great, strong coffee,) was tasteless and bland. Waffles and french toast were terribly stale. The selection of fruit was very limited and the baked items were terrible. The bathroom: The bathroom in my suite was a mess. It was covered (every surface) in mirrored glass. I thought I had stepped onto the set of Scarface and that Michelle Pfeiffer was about to come around the corner with a bag of coke. It was not only outdated and unattractive, but functioned so poorly. There was a glass door for the toilet area, but none for the shower. Water flooded the bath mat and bathroom whenever the shower was used. There was also no where to hang a towel near the shower, where you could easily grab it when finished. The hotel also placed the bottles of shampoo and shower gel on a shelf across the tub, but placed nothing in reach of the shower. There was a basket for a bar of soap, but no place to put a bottle of shampoo or other bath products you might need during a shower. In addition the shower faucet was broken, making it very difficult to control the water temperature. I called guest services to have it fixed, but it was never properly repaired. The mirror clad vanity looked awful the second you used it as water droplets made it look dirty immediately. There was a lovely soaking tub in the room, but no bath salts or bubble bath were left to use in it. TV: The tv’s did not work well. They were often slow to respond to inputs on the remotes. The tv remotes were kept in a holder with a list of the available tv channels, but the channels listed did not match the actual tv channels. The lighting system: The lighting system made little sense to me. It wasn’t clearly labeled and some switches would turn off every light in the suite, while others would create some ambience with certain lights, but it wasn’t possible to control most lights individually. For instance, there was only one light switch in the suite’s foyer. It either turned every light in the suite on or off. There was no way to turn the hallway light on or off individually. Another oversight with regard to lighting was the lack of a nightlight setting for the bathroom. Every decent hotel I’ve stayed in in the last ten years has a setting for soft lighting underneath the bathroom vanity or behind the toilet. That way you can use the bathroom without turning on bright lights. Not available at this Ritz Carlton. The suite was also missing some very basic equipment….There was a nice bar in the suite and wine available to drink, but I couldn’t find a cork screw or bottle opener anywhere. For some reason there was no alarm clock in my room on the first night. It was added on day 2. There were so many basic things missing at this hotel. I cannot imagine the manager has ever spent a night at his/her hotel. If they had they would quickly have come face to face with so many easily correctable faults they would have had to rectify them. Finally….I was supposed to check out and fly out of Istanbul on May 1st. Unfortunately it was labor day and the government had shut down all of the roads within 5 kilometers of Taksim Square (including the roads all around this hotel) for security reasons. While this shutdown was completely outside of the hotel’s control, they did a terrible job of communicating this information to their guests. I did not find out anything about the shutdown, until a few hours before I needed to leave for the airport. By that time it was too late and my only option to get to the airport was to walk about a mile uphill and down with all of my luggage to a ferry that could take me to the Asian side of of the city and then take a cab to the airport. Not really a great option. I canceled my flights, and rebooked everything for the following day. The hotel very kindly extended my stay for an additional night and let me stay in the suite again at a very reduced rate. However, they only communicated this very crucial bit of information in two very ineffective ways. The cleaning lady left a preprinted note on my desk, and there was a message added to the welcome screen on the tv. I noticed neither. A. There were all sorts of pieces of paper and notes on my desk. It got missed amongst them. B. I don’t read the welcome screen every time I turn on my television. It was also missed. Three better ways to communicate important news like this might have been: 1.) a note in an envelope left under my door, which I would have picked up and read. 2.) a recorded message to guests left on the phone’s voicemail system. 3.) Have bellman and other staff hand guests notes as they come in and out of the hotel. They could then tell them that there is some very important information in the note. None of this was attempted and what was done was terribly inadequate. I certainly would never stay here again and can make recommendations for vastly superior hotels in the immediate vicinity that cost far less.

Great service and wonderful people. I recommend this hotel. I must say that the staff working at the hotel are so friendly and helpful. They are the main reason for this positive review. Extra thanks to Ömer, Berkeley, Furkan, Sude and to Rima for help with restaurant reservations. Thank you!!!

Since my first step into the hotel entrance till the end of my visit, the staff was very polite, warm and helpful. I felt like the top vip even it was only a casual visit for breakfast. The service quality was high I’ve ever seen. Berkay at Atolye Restaurant was so welcoming. He observes your needs very well and offering service even before you request it. He was amazing.

Dated hotel with no outdoor space

This hotel is dark, dated and smells like smoke. I feel like I have traveled back to the 80’s. The room is ok, great views but everything else needs an update. We wanted to go outside.. nothing outside is open. The outside is getting a renovation? It’s 75 degrees and beautiful, but we can’t enjoy it! It is also in a location that is hard to walk from.. tons of busy traffic circling the hotel. We booked with Amex Fine Hotels and resorts, this is not a fine hotel and definitely not a resort. The circular check in area is also super weird and dated. There are tons of great Hotels in Istanbul, next time I will make a different choice.
